My wife is sick of it, but every day my 4-year old requests "the body book" for her bedtime story. Sometimes my 2-year old even requests it. It's definitely not written at that age level, but the pictures are fantastic and the explanations can be rephrased to make it more interesting for younger kids. It's much better than cartoon depictions of human anatomy which don't quite paint the correct picture. The book has everything in the human body so yes, there are some pages we avoid as we're not quite ready to talk through those in detail. The book is also made to last and still reads like new after a couple months of owning it.I highly recommend this book. My kids are having a blast with their newfound fascination for the human body... and I'm glad it has replaced their previous favorite topic (sewers).
I got this for my son because hes become very interested in his body. Why the f$^@*!& does a book by Smithsonian have an anatomically incorrect illustration of the human body? In other words where is the foreskin?? Why is this normal, biologically important part of the body just completely left out? I'm returning the book, I'm not keeping something that is going to teach my kids that it in order to be "normal" they have to have a piece of their body cut off.
I am buying these Smithson books, for my grandson, for his required reading logs for school. He is 7 years old, in second grade, and is an advanced reader. He really enjoys these books, and looks forward to more.
I purchased this book to use while homeschooling my 4 year old, and it is amazing. I love all of the detailed pictures and descriptions that aren't over my head. It is a great tool to help him learn about the body and its functions since he wanted to go more into depth about it.
Amazing illustrations and computer generated representation of the human body inside and out. Covers damn near everything you can think of in extremely fine detail with explanations of everything. At the very least a conversation piece for coffee table. Looks MUCH more expensive than just $20. Get it. Not just for children, in fact, probably not mainly for kids.
So far all is well with this book. Getting my son into learning about the human anatomy, as others have mentioned it does show male and female parts so caution when showing little kids this book if you're not ready to teach them that yet. The thing I don't like is on page 153 it talks about the pelvis and “how we evolved from four legged ape like creaturesâ€... Excuse me, WHAT?? I will be crossing this text out as that is not what I believe and don’t think it should be published in an educational book aimed at teaching about the anatomy of the human body. Aside from this major issue, however the book has very nice illustrations and you can easily break down for younger kids, my son is almost six. Pages are large and have colorful pictures. This is enough for me to keep the book, however if you read this and are concerned, go through the book before you give it to your child so that you can block certain things out if you need to.
This book is AWESOME not only for children, but adults as well. This book is so beautifully iillustrated and has so much information packed into such a sturdy book. I expect nothing less from the Smithsonian. I am very pleased.
I bought this book for my 8 year old son and while he's interested, it may be a bit advanced for him. But that's ok, because it's something we can use for a long time as he continues to learn. The information is very detailed and the pictures are very good. High quality printing.
