About the Author
Kent Anderson is a U.S. Special Forces veteran who served in Vietnam and a former police officer in Portland, Oregon, and Oakland, California. With an MFA in creative writing from the University of Montana, he has taught college-level English and written screenplays. His two previous novels, Sympathy for the Devil and the New York Times Notable Book Night Dogs, both feature Hanson. Anderson may be the only person in U.S. history to have won two NEA grants for creative writing as well as two Bronze Stars. He lives in New Mexico.

I’ve been a big fan of Kent Anderson since I first read “Sympathy For The Devil†back in the late 90s. Green sun is the third book in the trilogy that features Hanson, a former Vietnam era Green Beret turned cop. I can’t say enough for Anderson’s writing, he is a master of conveying both imagery and complex emotions. His books have been placed in the same category as most police procedurals, but his writing transcends that genre in many ways. The main character is both sympathetic and complex, and the situations presented are believable although almost surreal at times. I waited almost 20 years for this book and it was worth every minute. Thank god for authors like Kent Anderson.

In GREEN SUN’s death-haunted universe, wondrous creatures (the Temple rabbit and always, Death) scrabble and hop at the peripheries while the most downbeat horrors fill each day of a city’s occupation. His beat is a ghetto of the fabulous. There are single chapters in GREEN SUN richer in sign, symbol and action than most novels in their entirety.
I’ve been waiting for a new Anderson novel since I read his other two in 2001. This is a hell of a book. It reminded me of Jesus’ Son because of the structure of the novel, and the writing reminds me of Denis Johnson, as well. Still, Anderson is an original. Whether you agree with him or not, he is unafraid to put his views on display. I admire his courage and hope it doesn’t take so long for him to write the next one.
Met the protagonist, Hanson, in the authors first novel: “Sympathy for the Devilâ€. Had to wait too long for his reappearance in “Night Dogsâ€. Was delighted when “Green Sun†Unexpectedly showed up as a kindle recommendation. All three are great books. The trilogy is one of the most insightful and accurate portrayals of the Vietnam and post Vietnam experience of an elite soldier in modern literature. I cannot recommend these novels more highly. Read them all. I’m looking forward to the next installment..... I hope. My greatest appreciation and compliments to Mr Anderson.
I can’t say that I couldn’t put it down but I had to see it thru. Lots to think about. The protagonist is as engrossing as any I have encountered. The style of writing, plot and presentation are all as my headline described. If you are ready to step back from run of the mill I strongly recommend “Green Sunâ€.
I just finished Green Sun. To say this is an excellent book would be an understatement. I first read Sympathy for the Devil back in 1988. And then Night Dogs twelve years later. Read these books regardless if you were or are a soldier, police officer or civilian. You won't be disappointed. Well done Mr. Anderson.
I can't write a review this moment, but what really struck me was Kent's poetic license. My long time friend who recently died, Michael Parks, could have really played Hanson's role well I like stuff like this that moves against the grain of stereotype. I'm not given to tossing around superlatives, but I have to say that this is a truly brilliant book. Kent Anderson has managed to combine crime fiction and magical realism in a stunning and utterly original way. We never leave the hard, mean streets of Oakland and its twisted cop culture, but at the same time, we're somehow transported into this other reality that seems almost timeless. The cop hero, Hanson, struggles to maintain his emotional and spiritual equilibrium in a hellish urban landscape littered with one surprise after another--right up to the last page. It's difficult to say any more without introducing spoilers. Just get it and read it. You won't be disappointed,
