A favorite of mine, especially the second of this two-book compilation - the Vita St. Louis. Joinvilles vivid first hand account of the seventh crusade makes for a real page turner.
This is a wonderful, action packed true story of the medieval French, organizing farmers and lordlings to fight the Muslims to try to win back the Holy Land for the Christians.
This is an excellent read about the 4th Crusade, it is well worth reading for anyone interested in this part of our history. I learned things I had really never thought about, and I'm a young 80 years old. I Purchased this through my Kindle which I am seldom without.
Outstanding and very interesting read.
Unlike so many histories,this book tells us what were the impressions,views,and experiences of those who were actually there. The best history of the crusaders' experiences I have read. The author's notes helped give those narratives context.
I highly recommend this translation of Joinville and Villehardouin.The translator has taken care to translate these works into lucid, contemporary language without dumbing down the writing. Her work has paid off, providing a readable and lively edition still suitable for scholarly review.Whether you are reading these for enjoyment, personal interest, or academic reasons, this translation is a good one.
Very enjoyable and fairly easy read on this tragic portion of history. You would think the Crusades would serve as the ultimate example as to why we shouldn't send our youth and in the Crusades context, the Flower of Society to fight a largely political foreign war (masked with religion of course) that gains nothing.But then, we don't learn from history do we?
Needed for school. And it got the job done.
