The story drew me in right away but just about the time all the characters had been introduced, and the conflict set up, the book ended. I know that writing several series of novellas has apparently become a thing, but as a reader, it's annoying and disjointed. Either get the entire story in one short book or write an actual novel that fits your story. Annoyed enough that I will likely not continue with the series, because there wasn't enough story to get invested in.
So... its a good story. I like it, but the writing (grammar, mis-spellings/typos, even the flow) is rough at times. I almost gave up on it, but I didn't. But saying that I got to the end isn't saying much BECAUSE, there is only like 150 pages. My kindle was showing that I was only about 70% through the book when it ended ... in a cliffhanger. That is because the rest of it was an excerpt from another book. Not very honest marketing. And it's not a Novella. It's the first 150 pages of a 400 page book. The world building, character development, and situation are worthy but it runs out of pages before much actually happens. It definitely leaves you wanting more, but I recommend you wait until the actual novel (whole story) is published.Note that the 2nd "book" in the Magic-Born Dragon trilogy, isn't a book or Novella either. It's the next nineteen or so chapters at around 90 pages ... that ends in a cliffhanger as well. I guess that means its really $10 for the story ($3 times three "books.")PG-13 for violence and sexual innuendo. The 2nd installment is rated R.
Half-Blood Dragon by K.N. Lee is the first book in her newest series about a girl who is half human and half dragon. Man can I relate to her! The point in not being "whole" and accepting that about herself. The story is quite amazing and I highly recommend it.The story draws you in and doesn't let go, even after the final page of the last chapter. I needed more! Do yourself and favor and get this now! You will not regret it!
Series definitely has potential. Way too short. Characters are likeable. Not a fan of cliffhangers. Not sure if ill read the next one
I ttok a few days to think about these 3 books, since I got them all and read them straight thru. Basic story line was ok but thats it. complete story was stupid. 1st chapter woman escapes castle. start of 2nd chapter woman is bck in cstle. real father turns out to be a pirate captain. Has mermaid girl friend who protects him. turns out he is a terrible sorcerer. his girl friend is under his spell. me must not know he's a sorcerer because he lets his ship be destroyed and his men killed. he collects maps so he can find the Red Dragon but earlier in life he stole the Red Dragons lady the White Dragon so he knows where to find him. He changes the White Dragon into half human half dragon, ruins her life. for unknown reasons she falls in love with same sorcerer and has baby by him then he leaves before baby born but he loved the dragon, because thays why he took her and changed her. no back ground on characters. Lots of grammar mistakes. chapters were not separated. the best character is a scribe who works for the pirate, but turns out to be a powerful sorcerer too. totally confusing books. I'm not sure what was gong on with the Writer but she is way lot better than tbhese books.
What begins with prejudice, treason, and most of literature's seven deadly sins, sails off with pirates and prophecy unfulfilled to end up, temporarily, where the half-blood dragon began. More questions were posed than were answered and the impromptu voyage slowly left this reader with even more questions to begin K. N. Lee's "epic dragon fantasy". At least the reader will not suffer from a dearth of questions to be answered. From the writing, I would say K.N.Lee is adept at setting up the reader with a lot to ponder and that should cover the proposed series.Prejudice figures predominantly from the beginning and continues throughout without stint. I found "Half-Blood Dragon" slow, but hope the rest of the series will not disappoint. The writing is good, if a bit cliche-ed and may pick up once the dragons and resentments and lost chances hit their stride, especially with the pirates suffering such losses in the beginning with a wizard leading them and a mermaid tagging along. Mermaids are not -- as we hve seen -- without wiles and bite. A mermaid, called Sidhe, cannot be without her attitude for long, not when she is shacking up with the head pirate to whom she has sworn her loyalty.I am impressed with K. N. Lee's imagination and writing. Has Lee bitten off more than the author can chew or is this the long, slow beginning to an epic tale that will put dragon tales to shame once the story has been revealed? I look forward to unraveling a complex and adventure filled story that will loom over the landscape like the thousand-year ice wall that continues to loom over Westeros.
I enjoyed this book very much. The author does a good job of world building, but reveals new elements slowly as the heroine discovers them. My only complaint is that this is the first in a series and there is no real conclusion to anything by the end of book one, just more questions . The issues are very interesting -quests, dragons, prophesies, magical abilities, intrigues, love- but there are no resolutions to any of them. I'm not sure who the good guys and bad guys are any more and I feel like I just watched a TV series season finale. I am definitely going to read the next book in the series ASAP. There is some violence, but no sexual scenes or profanity.
